So, after a hectic weekend running errands, tidying the garden and washing the car, I haven't had a moment to reflect on my first weeks as a blogger and owner of a website! I do recall a conversation I had with Simon about how it's amazing how my business idea has grown, solidified, materialized right in front of my eyes. It's now 'out there', becoming a reality and evolving all the time, the more I think it through. For example, I had thought that I would do things a certain way when working with clients, to ensure they're well looked after and their needs met. Then I did some research into what other make-up artists are offering and discovered that I can simplify my approach so that the client is well served and taken care of and my role becomes more streamlined, efficient and focused.
So, lots of stuff has been going on recently, which is why I haven't been writing. I attending my eldest son's end of school picnic at a local park; 2 Teachers, 28 8/9 year olds and a few mums and their youngsters, Me and Reuben included. The children were asked to bring an outdoor activity to share with the class and we couldn't think of what to bring. So I brought my face paints along. It was a hit! I think I managed to paint about 15 kids faces in about 90 minutes, so I need to speed that up a bit, but it was great fun and the kids loved it. The major thing I noticed was that one particular face was the most popular - the dragon. About 8 of them chose it and I started to run out of paint. Another success was the cheek art - dinosaur, shark and unicorn. I would like to add more to my repertoire as these didn't take very long to do and used less paint as a result. I will be adding photos to this post as soon as I get permission from parents to do so. My friend Kim, one of the mums on the day, was kind enough to take lots of photos of the day including the kids newly painted faces. Thanks Kim.
The greatest thing that happened to me last week was...I booked my first Canadian client!!! A mum from school is going to a wedding and she wants me to apply her make-up! I'm so excited and can't wait for the consult. She has a beautiful face and it's an honour to provide her with this service. Stay tuned for before and after photos!
Have a great day!
Well, not many people know this, but my middle name is Dawn. Yes, yes, I know what you're thinking..."your parents were hippies", "morning has broken" etc. Needless to say, I hated it. I didn't want it, never told anyone unless asked, didn't identify with it what so ever!
However, one evening, brainstorming as to what to call my new venture concerning wedding make-up in particular, I came across this image in my computer. I had taken this photo when we had been in Vancouver for just a few days. It was November and the Autumn sun was setting in English Bay, and thought it a nice composition so added it to my collection and didn't really think much more about it.
Now, with weddings, being a married woman myself and somewhat of a romantic, I associate a wedding with the joining of the lives of the couple, the next chapter, the 'dawn'ing of a new era if you will. And it occurred to me that my middle name could at last be an asset to me and my new business. No 'made-up', novelty name - me, my name incorporated into the name of the business and I had an image to go with it that embodied the notion that we are all clean, innocent and new, when we enter marriage and I can aid that journey by ensuring that the bride feels so special and looking her absolute best for her husband to be on the big day, no worries, taken care of, done! newDawn: Wedding Make-Up.
Now, I know that the image is of a sunset, but who would know, really. It could be a sunrise? Couldn't it? You tell me...
So, I'm working on getting my Wedding page set up to display my services and various packages you can hire me for, so watch this space!
Have a great day!
Hi again, this is so exciting as I now have people to write to not just ether! I am inspired in my make-up to be bold and daring probably because of my upbringing. I am the oldest of 4 girls and one boy and felt the need to assert myself in creative ways since I was about 5 years old - I was always experimenting with my Mum's leftover Avon samples - the ones that no-one wanted as they were too 'loud' or 'brassy'. I was influenced by the music of the 80's so that says ALOT! Adam and the Ants, Chaka Khan, Beasty Boys and Kylie! WOW - you're probably thinking "eclectic" or "too much"! Aarrggghh! But it has given me the confidence to wear colour and since I've been practising for 25 years, I've gotten quite good at it and know when to stop! I have some great photos of me when I was about 10, 11, 12 years old in some weird gear! Punk make-up, Pop make-up. and I had an orange fetish at one stage which resulted in a photo of me wearing an orange pin-stripe suit, orange shoes, socks, silk shirt, eyeshadow and lipstick, and earrings all at the same time! Oh the 80's - daring, but I loved it! I love make-up and have so much in me to give in terms of creative passion and drive. I want to demonstrate to women how beautiful they can be and make them feel great about themselves. That's it!
Today I have Isaac at home sick so not sure how much time I'm going to get but I am going to try and record a video of 'Diva' eyes - soft, smoky, sexy and mysterious. Ideal for an evening party or cocktail hour at your local wine bar. I hope you have fun trying to recreate this look and don't forget, it can be toned down for daytime or jazzed up with sparkle for fun nights out. I particularly love this look as it works well with my skin tone and eye colour. But there are alternatives if you have lighter eyes and skin - I'll talk about that in the vid. Have a great day!
